Over the course of its 11 year lifespan, Sleeping Bag moved between dancefloor-friendly genres at will, a facet that Brewster has wisely chosen to celebrate over three discs. Over the course of three CDs - not to mention his usual detailed sleeve notes - Brewster tells the story of the influential '80s house label, from the pioneering early works of Frankie Knuckles, Chip-E and Fingers Inc, through the timeless anthems of Joe Smooth, Farley Jackmaster Funk and Sterling Void, to the hip-house of Fast Eddie and Tyree Cooper.
Being Brewster, there are also a few forgotten gems and deeper selections to be found, too, making this a fitting tribute to one of dance music's most important labels. Sterling Void - "Serve It Up" original extended instrumental club 12" mix.
Here, Bill Brewster continues his impressive Anthology series by Crazy - Brooklyn Bounce - BB-Styles Box Set together three discs worth of classics and slept-on gems from the imprint's bulging archives. Founded in 81, it's one of the most important labels in disco, electro, hip-hop and house music: from Russell's lolloping Dinosaur L jams to the formative electronic soul of Mantronix to the electro boogie of Dhar Braxton and Clandestine to the loose funk Felix, we're brought to a break-splattered proto-house climax with Ecstasy's "Don't Play Me Raw" where you can actually hear the seeds of every element of contemporary dance music being planted.
A proper history lesson on a very influential label Insert 'don't sleep on this ultimate Sleeping Bag collection' remark right here. This is the umpteenth label Anthology he's compiled over the last 12 months, and tells the story Arthur Baker's Streetwise Records and, sneakily, its' lesser-known offshoots Partytime and Warlock during the early-to-mid s.
While there are plenty of well-known club hits from the period included - think "Walking On Sunshine", "Confusion", "Music Is The Answer", and so on - it's the lesser-known or forgotten gems that standout.
These include a clutch of killer proto-house and early "garage-house" jams Pushe, Citispeaksome post-boogie electrofunk Cuba Gooding Junior's forgotten "Got The Hots", a touch of Eartha Kittand a swathe of electro, hip-hop and freestyle cuts from the likes of Awesome Foursome, Air Force 1 and Dimples D.
This follow-up - once again compiled and mixed by Bill Brewster - offers more of the same. Musically it's pleasingly varied, moving from the string-drenched downtempo beauty of Typesun's "Last One Home", to the heady Balearic rock of General Lee, via Justus Kohnke, the soulful post-bruk smoothness of As One, and the sprightly analogue electronics of Emperor Machine's remix of Paqua's "Late Train".
Here, Brewster turns his attention to another New York institution of the late '70s and early '80s, popular disco imprint Sam Records. D - and lesser-known gems. Serious Intention - "You Don't Know" original limited edition special 12" remix Focusing on the original club versions, the collection does well to show how ahead of its time Easy Street were, tailoring their cuts with the DJ in mind.
Thrillingly, the lads and lasses at Harmless have succumbed to pressure from vinyl-loving DJs and put together this triple-album edition. D's "Don't Stop" etc. Over three discs, he does a terrific job in showcasing the imprint's instinctive fusion of soul and disco, serving up both familiar staples - Cloud's "Atmosphere Strut", Super Jay's "Super Jay Love Theme" etc. While the soul and disco side of the label's output has been celebrated plenty of times, People Come In - Daniele Patucchi - Turbo Time attention has been paid to their funk and rap credentials.
Tribal Rites: Part 2 2xLP. Eskimo Belgium. Tribal Rites unmixed 3xCD. The resultant collection is vast and predictably on-point, with each of the CDs gathering together tracks on a loose theme "Post-Punk", "Balearic" and "House".
As you'd expect, it's a hugely impressive and eye-opening set, with Brewster serving up largely obscure or long-forgotten cuts that range in scope from trippy, dubbed-out post-punk disco, jaunty jazz-funk, synth-heavy boogie and heavily percussive Afro-disco grooves, to saucer-eyed European synth-pop, the dub techno of Maurizio, Swag's early UK tech-house and the East Midlands deep house bump of Charles Webster's "A Love From San Francisco" project.
In other words, it's a cracker from start to finish. Tribal Rites: Part 1 2xLP. Headline Book Publishing. The work of journalists Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton, who, between them, have worked on The Face, i-D, Rolling Stone and Musik, they certainly know their deep house from their speed garage.
But while Last Night A DJ Saved My Life is an impressively knowledgeable compilation of information, they never quite decide whether this is an intellectual resource, a complete history, or if they're playing these records just for kicks. So in the preface fun is poked at abstract nonsense about postmodern intertextuality and the pair thunder into well-reasoned, impassioned debate about the DJ being a modern-day shaman--pulse-racing stuff, which makes it all the more uncomfortable when Dont Tame A Hurricane - Slade - B-Sides segues into an unremittingly dull chronological history of the invention of the record deck.
The pace quickens with an excellent chapter People Come In - Daniele Patucchi - Turbo Time Northern Soul, and in hot pursuit follow impressive histories of the reggae, hip-hop and disco genres. But then Acid House, perhaps Britain's most important musical evolution ever, is given short shrift and techno is dismissed over a mere ten pages as house's swotty offspring.
To celebrate years of DJing, Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton have expanded and updated their classic account of the history of the disc jockey. A century later and the DJ is the central figure in popular music. From these humble talking jukebox origins to today's DJ superstars earning rock star salaries with a fanbase to match, the history of the DJ is fascinating and unpredictable.
The story of these unlikely cultural icons takes the reader through the swinging sixties, through the sequinned revolution that was disco, via hip hop and house to mass-market global domination.
Bill and Frank's classic chronicle digs deep to find DJing started inthe Nazis invented clubbing and Jimmy Savile should be a hero to all. The new edition is beefed up with entirely new chapters covering techno, acid house, Ibiza, jungle, UK garage and cosmic disco. These are the obsessives, the playboys, the musical eccentrics who founded the craft of DJing, developed amazing techniques for performing with recorded music, and Querida Dont Let Them Move - Jerry Adriani - Um Grande Amor the way music is conceived, created and enjoyed.
