This two CD set is divided into two parts. The first is John Lee on guitar and Alan Wilson on guitar, harp and piano doing a stripped down performance of some great tunes.

The next tune is "Whiskey and Wimmen" in which the entire band comes in, an absolutely phenomenal tune. The second disc is really where the full sound of John Lee and The Heat shines. John Lee Hooker says on the first disc that Alan Wilson must've listened to all his music to play along as he did. I agree. This CD is an awesome example of Boogie Music. Alan Wilson's harmonica is sheer brilliance and John Lee proves he is the master of boogie.

I bought this CD in when my LP had pretty much been played to death. Just listening to John Lee Hooker speak a 'lil, like he does, between songs, is so real; and damn cool.

Side 2 picks up the Boogie pace as all play well together. Side one is mostly Hooker joined by Wilson on a couple of those special talking moments when his harmonica and piano standout.

The liner notes are good too. This is a wonderfully cool blues document that is better the second time. Give it a shot. The blues baby. I liked and enjoyed both Canned Heat and John Lee Hooker, back around , when they were both somewhat new to these ears, listening to them on the then still developing sound of FM radio. I recall seeing this album in the record store when it came out but passed as I was into other more prominent sounds of the time.

Listening to it now, I would say it was a good thing they came together to leave this for us. My feeling for this album is an overall thing, and based not on cherry-picking but what the result achieved, at least these many years later - a deeper respect for what both Mr. Hooker and the Canned Heat were into back then, honest representation of the roots delta though not purely so and expressiveness allowed within the blues music they loved that came to engage so many, years later in the boogie incarnation.

It may be the blues, but the life within remains large. This is very much an intimate snapshot, with the talking back during the collaboration process, of a group of artists who manifested an opportunity to create and play music together. I feel like a guest in the session allowed in, if you will. Based on all of the above, I enjoyed this very much. Paul N. Robinson Top Contributor: Classic Rock. I feel as though I should like this album more than I do.

Perhaps real blues is not my thing. I have no doubt John Lee Hooker is a master, and Canned Heat won me over with great boogies both before and after this album. Here, however, songs drag. No real fire. Not for me. If you are an hardcore Hooker fan, perhaps for you! This was pure, raw, gritty blues! I had never even heard of Canned Heat before getting this gem. Not one bad song on this set! Extremely talented musicians!

Whether you are a John Lee Hooker fan or generally a blues fan, I would greatly recommend this set. Ballsy, man! This is an awesome album across the board. John Lee Hooker is on top of his game and is completely in charge.

Nov 24,  · This album is dedicated to BOB "THE BEAR" HITE, whose idea it was to record an evening with Canned Heat´s close friends; JOHN LEE HOOKER, and LESTER, GEORGE.
