Having said that, being an oficionado of Easy listening, I like it! That's all I have to say! Or something. I found an older version of this CD maybe 15 years ago in a bargain bin, where I saw it languish for weeks before I decided to give it a try. I guess no one else knew what to make of it either. It became one of my favorite CDs. She sings in a small, quiet, breathy, sometimes smoky voice that another reviewer compares to Astrud Gilberto "The Girl from Ipanema" , with a bit of a British accent.
Sometimes she, and some of the songs and noises, sound like Young Marble Giants, and sometimes they also remind me of early His Name Is Alive unfortunately, a reference not much less obscure than this music--check them out!
She plays bass. Guest musicians add the above-mentioned brass, drums and percussion. The music has a curiously discrete energy; even with occasional blaring brass and free brass solos, Latin percussion, whistles, it's all contained within a relaxed, casual, slightly spacey frame.
Sometimes there's a driving groove. There are some darker pieces the ones that sound most like early His Name Is Alive, though not nearly as dark on the whole. It always sounds fresh. There have been several releases of this album on CD, with different tracks. This one isn't the fullest, but if you find it at a good price it might be worth getting. You don't have to be into lounge music or alternative or the even more precise categories others have placed it in to enjoy this, but if you are, you'll probably want to give it a try.
These folks were ahead of their time, and the music has held up very well for me. Sometimes she, and some of the songs and noises, sound like Young Marble Giants, and they also sometimes remind me of early His Name Is Alive unfortunately, a reference not much less obscure than this music--check them out! This latest one is the fullest, including everything from the original LP plus a bunch of bonus tracks.
You don't have to be into lounge music or alternative to enjoy this, but if you are, you'll probably want to give it a try.La Varieté is an impressive achievement, but is too stylistically diverse to make much sense, and at times the individual tracks seem like genre exercises. It's a bad sign that "Drum Beat for Baby," a deliberate stylistic throwback, is the strongest cut on the album.9/.
