Closer "I Saw God" takes an already near-inscrutable ode to a minor drug epiphany and manipulates it with tape-masking and censoring "bleep" noises, before its full-band climax goes off less like a tidal wave of sound and more like someone falling over a drum riser.

If there's beauty in imperfections, some of these songs are shrines. No one's going to mistake this record for anyone but Black Lips, but they are stretching out as band here, pulling back their own tics in favor of things like style and tone.

Vocal duties are spread more democratically among the band, and more styles are dabbled with, though they haven't moved the needle too far on the college radio dial. I'd worry about that later. It was impulsive, I was an enamoured 17 year old, and we were perfect for each other. Four years later and my brief but brilliant dalliance with the band's music had long since ended.

Live, they were still electrifying and trailblazing literally around the globe, but 's Million Thousand had left me cold. Which is why Arabia Mountain was such a bolt from the blue.

It ticked a lot of boxes for a twenty-something fan without the same natural enthusiasm or devotion as a teenager.

  5. On the Black Lips' fifth studio album, 's Million Thousand, not much has changed on the naheasontelifa.puttvabwallveponcisolezytofouli.co they are a little more together, more focused and tight, but they still have enough ramshackle swagger and loose-as-a-goose sleaze to go around and have enough for seconds.

  8. The Black Lips are not for looking over the rainbow or beyond the horizon or over the next hill; the Black Lips are for looking back. This is true enough for their latest release, Million Thousand, and if you are cursorily familiar with their older work then you know what to expect here: flower punk (their term) played with sloppy abandon and lyrics about cruising around in cluttered cars /5(16).
