Lucidity is where things really start to get interesting. This song is so laid back and dynamic it's almost required headphone listening. The bass lines carry a current of heaviness while Martin Lopez's drums take on a soft-spoken lead role and the guitars flutter with beautiful less-is-more leads. The guitar solos here are also of note, emotive and expressive as anything David Gilmour has ever done, while Joel's lyrics are so gorgeous, so pained he could move mountains with the melancholy.
Later tracks Opal, Sister and Stray maintain that signature Soen sound but don't offer much new in terms of what the band has done no gripe by any means, especially for Sister, the heaviest track on the record.
Paragon takes the Lucidity approach and mesmerises with it's restraint and implied longing. The album alone is worth a near perfect score, but this is the rare vinyl purchase I wish I could rate higher.
The sleeve is lovely, with the artwork raised along the front and a gatefold with more art and album credits. The LP is heavyweight g I believe ,classic black, and sounds immaculate. The album was recorded on old analog equipment props! How I felt listening to this lush masterpiece the first time, lights out and headphones on, must've been how it felt listening to King Crimson's ITCOTCK for the first time back in the day. Soen are progressing in the best possible way.
If there's one thing that's clear about Soen it's this: they've earned the right to stop being called a Tool clone. So do them a favor, drop the preconceived notions and spin this thing. Brutal, yes?
If you find yourself wanting a band that blends your favorite elements of the atmospheric sensitivity of Pink Floyd, the chewy bass tones of Tool, the post grunge weird and heavy writing of Muse, the head-bop vibe of Chevelle, and the incredibly interesting and absorbing prog rock instrumental mastery of Dream Theater, while managing to sound completely original and unique all on their own then this is the band you've always wanted. Soon Lykaia delivers as a grand and personal escape, a dreamy yet still crushingly catchy parallel universe.
Every song, performance, lyric, title, note, tone - everything is perfect and completely purposeful and meaningful and dynamic and rich and so easy to get lost in. Buy it now and don't stop listening to it.
One person found this helpful. I really can't stop listening to this album. The floyd influences on Lucidity and Paragon are really amazing, the Gilmouresque guitar solos and haunting atmosphere just have me hooked. Check out Vitirol and God's Acre tracks not on mp3 download that are also really good and worth getting Phenomenal album. I've listened to the previous 2 albums quite a bit, and this one doesn't disappoint.
It has a nice balance between heavier and softer sounds. The only issue if you could call it that is the length is just under 50 minutes. I also saw there was a day one edition of the album with a 9th song, which I haven't heard yet. I only have the mp3 rip as of right now, and the physical copy is on its way, so I'm not sure if the physical copy from amazon is going to have that extra song or not.
Hopefully it does. So far, this is my favorite record by Soen. They seem to be really finding their place in the world of heavy progressive music. It's hard to shake off references to Tool but I think they've found their own voice on this record and I like what I'm hearing. I think everything they've done is good but this one certainly makes the statement that they're making their own music.
Yes it is true this band takes many cues from other bands like Tool and Opeths. The sound works but Soen definitely puts its own spin to make it unique. The vinyl sounds great and has a nice package. I can't give it 5 stars but 4 it deserves as an overall package. One of the best entire albums that i've came across in a long long time, amazing songwriting. There are many opinions about the influence of tool and opeth, i don't like too much those bands and i love this band.
Excellent musicians who really can crank it out when they chose to. I was very psyched to see another release from them, hoping it would be more like Cognitive than Tellurian, Cognitive having a much more unique, raw, and catchy sound and displaying more frequent blistering jams than Tellurian. Unfortunately, Soen chose to continue to move away from Cognitive's punchy genius. Retrieved January 27, The Midlands Rocks. Retrieved February 9, Power Of Metal.

The first album was compared to another band, that will remain nameless in this review, and that comparison got rather tiresome.
With Lotus, I think we can finally lay that comparison to rest, as Soen has developed into something beautiful, powerful and self-assured. Lotus makes known immediately, that changes have been made- again Ford favors the lush wailing solo a bit more than Jidell- who attempted to provide some of the atmospheric quality of HIS predecessor, Kim Platbarzdis.
That is a bit of a relay to get where we find Soen now, but it has also been a team-building exercise for the rest of the crew! Lotus is laden with rich swelling guitars- including some gorgeous guitar solos and bridges.
Not that this has become a guitar-centric band, it's just different. The guitars are sweet and thick like dulce de leche for your ears. The production on this album is fantastic. All elements have been balanced so that each instrument is well placed and gets to shine in its own right. Joel's voice has gotten stronger, and imparts depth and emotion to each track. He is a multi-talented artist, and I suspect his contributions are many. The rhythm section is the core of this band.
Stefan Stenberg joined the band for the second album, Tellurian, and has fully embraced the role he inherited from the powerhouse bassist Steve DiGiorgio. His playing provides a counterpoint to the ever brilliant Martin Lopez who, here, has laid down some of the best drumming I've heard since his work on his now classic performances on Opeth's Deliverance.
There are some really stand-out passages on this album, and the entire album is rich, melodic and consistent. Soen will embark on a European tour in March I hope that some day soon we will be greeting them in American venues! I've listened several times through now, and I can't get past some of the faults that make this less than their best though if you like Soen, buy it anyway.Soen "Opal": In your heart lies "Opal" lyrics.
