Let me set out mt stall. I would describe myself as on the modern side of jazz although I have always appreciated great musicianship from Louis Armstrong to Eric Dolphy. I have enjoyed recordings of Norman Granz' "Jazz at the Philharmonic" concerts, Eddie Condon's "Coast to Coast" recordings or Vic Dickenson's sessions, but I found this set of three studio recorded jam sessions the best.
Apparently John Hammond and Gearge Avakian wanted to record realistic "after hours jam sessions" so much part of jazz history which lead to the development of jazz. The Granz Philharmonic sessions were often part of a tour; the personnel and the tunes were pre-arranged reducing true spontaneity.
Hammond and Avakian, both Basie fans, realsed the importance of engaging a strong rythym section. Apparently the rest of the personnel were employed without knowledge of the other performers or repertoire. The typical line-up was eleven men: two trumpets, two trombones, alto, tenor, baritone, piano, guitar, bass and drums. With minimal preparation the music was recorded as if a spontaneous jam session. Tunes were often "warhorses" and the musicians were allowed to stretch out and often solo more than once ; recording time varies from ten to thirty minutes.
Every tune swings and is performed with such authority that it appears effortless. Certainly for the listener it is easy listening, and I don't use this term pejoratively. The product is timeless mainstream jazz of the highest order. Every track is a consummate masterpiece.
For me the standout track is "The Hucklebuck" on disc one. Fans of Humphrey Lyttelton's band - with the fantastic front line of Lyttelton, Picard, Moss, Coe and Temperley will understand where that sound came from; Lyttelton was an acknowledged fan of Clayton and tracks such as "The Hucklebuck" must have been a great influence.
Thoroughly recommended. The 19 lengthy tracks are mostly standards with superb solos and the minutes of relaxed, swinging classic mainstream jazz deserves a place in any serious collection. Still later, reissues see Volumes 9 and 10 [CL and , below] used a different generic cover design. We would appreciate any additions or corrections to this discography.
